Colorado Professional Firefighters License Plate

License plate FAQ

Please read before applying:

  • The first step is to fill out the application. Make sure the application is filled out with the correct information, and the information should match your registration.

  • The applicant’s (member in good standing) name must appear on the registration or new car documents. The application will be denied if your name is not on the documents.

  • Please make sure the membership documents are current, not expired. You can find your member card by downloading the IAFF app. Your current member card can be found under your profile.

  • Once the application has been received, the information will be verified. Once the information is verified, you will receive an embossed stamped certificate by US Postal mail. One certificate per vehicle, and they are not transferable. This includes the plate from the DMV. It is not transferable from one car to another.

  • Reminder: the CPFFF does not make or distribute these plates. The DMV controls all plates and fees. The CPFFF is just the foundation responsible for verifying and issuing the Certificates.

  • Certificates can not be emailed.

  • The DMV will not issue a plate if you do not present the certificate.

  • If you lose or misplace your certificate, you can request another one.

  • If you accidentally get charged for more than one certificate, you can request a refund.

  • The $60 fee is a required fee by the state. This fee is a donation that comes back to our firefighters through the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation.

  • The DMV will charge all of its standard license fees. We do not have any control over these fees, including the designer plate fee they charge.

  • If you apply and don’t receive your certificate by mail within a couple of weeks, please email us so we can send another one.

  • Out of state Firefighters living in Colorado are eligible for these plates as long as they are a member in good standing with their IAFF local.

  • The CPFF Foundation is the sole representative of the state legislation for the License plate. This means we can deny applications if they don’t meet the requirements.

  • Do not wait until the last minute to apply if your registration is expiring. We are not responsible if you cannot get your registration completed. We receive many requests, and the process does have a time commitment.

  • If you own a motorcycle, you can get the firefighter plate. RVs, trailers, campers, fifth wheels, and commercial vehicles cannot get this plate.

The process of getting these plates through legislation took much work. The plate distinguishes who we

are as professional firefighters. Remember, it represents who you are, and with them on your vehicles,

everyone notices the plate. Drive smart and be professional. We do not want to get them revoked.
